Bruno Silveira posted on LinkedIn an very interesting article about using IEC 61850 to a full extend!
He shows, that decarbonizing regional energy networks requires coupling thermal district networks directly with electrical distribution grids.
Excerpt: "To maximize operational responsiveness without jeopardizing critical grid stability or operational technology (OT) security, MTES (Mine Thermal Energy Storage) assets must interface directly with modern IEC 61850 Substation Automation Systems (SAS)."
This is the right view of applications being part of the electrical system: either as source or sink of electrical power!! Currents and voltages are the crucial ingredients of the energy storage systems ... electric storage or electric or ... whatever. Always the same need: coupling storage networks directly with electrical distribution grids.
It does not make sense to decouple power systems from big(ger) applications.
